To whom it may concern. 5-th International Astronomy Olympiad. Second announcement. (SAO RAS, Nizhnij Arkhyz, October, 20-27, 2000.) Dear colleagues ! You are welcome to participate! The Fifth International Astronomy Olympiad will take place in the late October 2000 in the Special Astrophysical Observatory of Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) in the North Caucasus Very SHORT HISTORY: The International Astronomy Olympiad (see www.issp.ac.ru/iao/) was founded by Euro-Asian Astronomical Society on June, 7, 1996. The last, 4-th Olympiad took place at the Crimean Research Centre (s. Nauchnyj, base of Crimean Astrophysical Observatory and Crimean Laboratory of Sternberg Astronomical Institute in Autumn 1999 (see www.issp.ac.ru/iao/1999/). HOLDING of the OLYMPIAD: According to the Statutes of the Olympiad (see www.issp.ac.ru/iao/statutes/) it is held every year sometime in the period of Astronomical Autumn (from September 22 till December 22) in one of the astronomical centres of the Olympiad member-states. School children of several age groups take part in the Olympiad. The Olympiad participants are not supposed to study at any institutions of higher education. According to the Acting Statutes/Regulations of the Olympiad the most of the competitors at the Olympiad-2000 will be divided in two age groups: 1. "yonger group" (born after 01.01.1985) and 2. "elder group" (born after 01.01.1983). The age restrictions for the CIS states (Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, etc.) are more strong (born after 01.03.1985 and after 01.09.1983 respectively). According to Founding Statutes of the Olympiad teams from the participating states consisting of winners of National Olympiads and prizewinners (I and II Diploma) of the previous International Olympiad take part in the Olympiad. National team (max): 3 participants in the younger group. 2 participants in the elder group. prizewinners (I-st or II-nd prize) of the previous IAO not older than the age limit. The Olympiad participants are not supposed to study at any institutions of higher education. 2 leaders (specialists in astronomy or astronomy education). not exceed the number of the national representativity. But ! IMPORTANT NOTE for interested participants in the Olympiad 2000: For the initial period of the Olympiad in order to popularization the Olympiad the Statutes of the Olympiad allow: 1. In the case of absence of a National team from a state, the regions, cities and towns or individuals of this state are responsible (by a permit of the Olympic Coordinating Council - see www.issp.ac.ru/iao/wb/) to take part in the Olympiad. Team of region, city, town (max): 2 participants in the younger group. 1 participant in the elder group. prizewinners (I-st or II-nd prize) of the previous IAO not older than the age limit. The Olympiad participants are not supposed to study at any institutions of higher education. 1 leader (specialist in astronomy or astronomy education). Total number of participants from a state should not exceed the number of the national representativity. SHORT INFROMATION ABOUT THE RULES AND PROGRAMME of the International Astronomy Olympiad 2000 (see also www.issp.ac.ru/iao/2000/). The jubilee, 5-th competition will take place at at the Research Centre "Special Astrophysical Observatory" of Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) in the late October 2000, day of teams arrival is defined as 20-th of October. Official languages of the Olympiad - English and Russian. Problems will be prepared by the Organizing Committee in these two languages and the leaders are responsible to translate tasks to native languages of participants. Character of the problems to solve will be analogous to ones of the Olympiads 1996-1999. (These 300 EURO: incl. visa support expenses if all data about participants will be received before August 17; excl. visa support expenses - after August 18.) In the case of extra days stay: about 35 EURO /person for every extra day. TAKE INTO ACCOUNT: documetns and permissions for entrance Russia are necessary for arriving to the Olympiad. Russian visas and visa support are necessary for citizens of some countries! To be sure for obtaining Russian visas full data about every proposed participant and leader must be known not later the first days of September!
