Subject: {MPML} Leonids from southern California
Visual observations of the 2001 Leonids
======================================
Lance A. M. Benner
lance@reason.jpl.nasa.gov
818-354-7412
Observing site:
latitude = 34 deg 01´ 23" N
longitude = 114 deg 51´ 30" W
Elevation: 250 m
Co-observers: Kathi Ellsworth and Sid Johnson
The observing site is east of Los Angeles in the desert
60 miles south-southwest of Needles, CA and about 4.5
miles south of Rice, CA (near California route 62).
Latitude and longitude were measured with a Magellan
315 GPS receiver.

Cirrus was present the entire time and obscured about 15% (F=1.18)
of my viewing area. It was thickest along the horizons,
particularly to the east-southeast. There was minor light
pollution along the horizon in several directions due to
reflections off of clouds. It was strongest due west toward
Twentynine Palms, CA.
Zodiacal light became increasingly bright after roughly
11:30 UT. During the count interval, zodiacal light reached
a maximum visible extent of about 45 degrees above the
eastern horizon and it affected the limiting magnitude
in that direction. I did not notice the gegenschein reported
by other observers.
Methodology
-----------
I dictated counts into two tape recorders that also recorded
time signals from shortwave radio station WWV (frequency=5 MHz).
I counted in five-minute intervals and subsequently binned
the counts into one minute, five minute, and sixty minute
intervals from the tapes.
Below are raw counts for a single observer (Lance Benner).
They are NOT zenithal hourly rates; that is, they have not
been adjusted for the elevation of the radiant,
percentage of the sky obscured by clouds, the limiting
magnitude, etc.
"Others" indicate meteors that were not Leonids. These
include members of the Taurid complex, other minor showers,
and sporadics.
